The car seat law mandates that all children travelling in a car, van, or goods vehicle must be safely secured in the correct child safety car seat until they reach either 135 cm in height or 12 years old, whichever comes first. After this age or height is reached, children must use an adult seat belt. It’s important to ensure that the child seat specifications are followed, whether it’s a group 0 car seat for infants or a group 1-2-3 car seat for older children.
Exceptions of the law
If a child car seat is not available in a licensed taxi or licensed private hire car, according to car seat law, the child may travel unrestrained in the rear. This is the only exception for children under 3 years, which was introduced for practical rather than safety reasons.
